The Planning and Development Department promotes and plans for the future vitality, livability and prosperity of this remarkable City and all its people.
The Planning and Development Department’s work involves overseeing and directing all planning and urban development activities, including enforcement of the City’s Historic Preservation Ordinance and state and local building codes, administration of both City housing assistance programs and the federal application process for community development and redevelopment assistance, and overseeing and directing the City’s economic development programs, including business recruitment and retention and advocacy of business interests in city government.
The economy in the Greater Portland region is strong. Downtown Portland, long a measure of the economic health of the region, is thriving. The continuing surge in the regional economy challenges our ability to manage growth. Business, neighborhoods, educational institutions and government all must work together to maximize the benefits of economic development for our quality of life.
Portland is Maine’s largest economic center and its
largest residential community. We will continue to work together to maintain
that perfect balance, while positioning our city to compete globally in a
world-class market.
